Environmental Sustainability at Finnebrogue Foods with NI Washrooms
Implementing URIFRESH Waterless Urinal Systems at Finnebrogue
Background
Finnebrogue is a family-owned, innovative UK food producer known for premium sausages and its revolutionary Naked Bacon. With four sites in Downpatrick, including a plant-based facility, Finnebrogue is deeply committed to sustainability through its 'Bigger Picture' ESG programme and the Denis Lynn Foundation.
In 2024, Finnebrogue reduced operational carbon emissions by 61.5%, installed 2,846 solar PV panels, and restored 4,000 m2 of land to native wild grasses. As part of its goal to cut water intensity by 20% by 2030 (from a 2022 baseline), Finnebrogue targeted urinal water usage.
Challenge
Operating 13 urinals that flushed every four minutes around the clock, Finnebrogue was wasting over 6.6 million litres of water annually. Concerns included odour control and maintenance issues like urine crystallisation.
Solution
NI Washrooms proposed installing URIFRESH waterless urinals to cut water use, eliminate odours and blockages, and lower operational costs. After a full site assessment, an installation plan was developed and implemented.
Implementation
- Seamless installation at the largest site with minimal disruption.
- Old urinals and pipework replaced to prevent inherited problems.
- New pipework installed with proper gradients for better flow.
- Patented microbe and enzyme cartridges prevent uric salt build-up.
- Memory-silicone non-return valves eliminate odour risks.
- Full cleaning products and maintenance training provided on site.
Results
- Annual water cost savings of over £26,252, even accounting for future water charge increases.
- Noticeable reduction in blockages and odours from day one.
- Effective and reliable ongoing maintenance confirmed.
- No issues reported three quarters post-installation.
Conclusion
URIFRESH waterless urinals provided Finnebrogue with a sustainable, cost-effective solution that supports large-scale manufacturing operations while promoting environmental stewardship and operational efficiency.
